Hi everyone,

I wanted to update you on the current floodlight situation and make sure anyone affected knows that we are working on it and are here to support you.

An existing planning condition means we can currently use only one of our two floodlit training areas at a time. We have put forward a proposal to allow both existing areas to operate together, without installing any additional lights. Unfortunately, the National Trust, as landowner, has not supported the proposal at this stage, citing conservation and landscape concerns. We are challenging that decision through the appropriate channels and seeking a constructive way forward.

In the meantime, we have had to shorten some sessions, start training earlier, finish later and introduce Friday evening training to accommodate everyone within the available space. This is not the arrangement we would choose, and we recognise that changes to training times can create difficulties around school, work, travel and family commitments.

Our priority is to keep everyone involved, provide safe and meaningful training across all sections, and avoid cancellations wherever possible. Please bear with our coaches, team managers and volunteers as they work through the practical arrangements.

We also recognise that rugby is about far more than what happens on the pitch. For many of our members, coming to the club means friendship, routine, a chance to switch off and an important source of support. Missing out on that can have a much greater impact than simply missing a training session.

If the changes mean you or your child are struggling to attend, can no longer make training, or are experiencing an impact on mental health or wellbeing, please write to me directly at b.burford@dorkingrfc.co.uk .

You do not need to share detailed personal or medical information. Just let me know how you are being affected and what would help. Personal concerns will be handled sensitively, and we will look at what support or practical adjustments may be possible. We may not be able to resolve everything immediately, but we do not want anyone to feel overlooked or left to deal with this on their own.

Thank you for your patience, flexibility and for looking out for one another. We will keep you updated as we work towards a solution.

One Club means looking after each other, on and off the pitch. That is the Dorking way.
