U18 GIRLS SURREY CUP WIN – 38-10

Sunday 25 January 2026

With the number of U18 Girls playing rugby in Surrey still comparatively low, clubs commonly cluster together to create teams and play in the Surrey Cup. Whilst this ensures game time, it presents a number of challenges for players and coaches re venues and joint training time and the limitations on some players imposed by PDG, County and Colleges present further problems re availability. It’s a testament to the commitment of clubs and players that games are played at all!

So it was, that the Dorking/Cobham /Guildfordians cluster (affectionately known as CobDorkFordians) played the Sutton & Epsom/Old Ruts/Battersea Ironsides cluster in their 3rd Cup match at Cobham. Having drawn against Farnham and unfortunately come out the wrong side of a hard-fought game v Old Reigations, they were looking for a win, and they laid down a challenge from kick-off.

The forwards controlled the ball well and built a stable platform for the backs to wield their power and pace. By half time the score was 21 – 5. Realising the opposition were tiring, the girls kept the pressure on in the second half and played some great heads-up attacking rugby, supporting one another with some beautiful offloads and winning numerous turnovers in the rucks with their determination and desire to win.

Although they had to play 14 a side for most of the game due to injuries on the opposition team, and several players trying out new positions in the scrum, the girls worked together, communicated well and played for each other. A great display of teamwork and friendship through rugby.

Special mentions to Ella, who’s confidence at 9 increased throughout the game, delivering quick ball and making a few sniping runs of her own, and to Alys, having a phenomenal debut at 8, with some blistering carries through and past the opposition.

A hugely well-deserved win played in Cobham kit this time.
