Dorking Colts Dig Deep to Secure Historic Stoop Final Spot

Dorking Colts 21 – 14 Guildford
Venue: The Big Field, Dorking Competition: Quins Cup Semi-Final Conditions: Blustery with fantastic sunshine; dusty, hard surface

Following a bustling morning of minis rugby, the club and volunteers did an incredible job clearing and preparing the ground for this massive fixture. Dorking knew they were in for a grueling test; while they had bested Guildford earlier in the season, the visitors arrived at full strength, bolstered by the return of their post-Christmas schoolboy contingent.

What followed was an enthralling and fiercely contested Quins Cup Semi-Final at the Big Field. Dorking Colts battled past defending champions Guildford with a 21-14 victory, punching their ticket to the final at the Stoop.

First Half: A Brutal Arm-Wrestle
Guildford started brightly and with the expected intensity, immediately putting the Dorking midfield under severe stress. Moving the ball with pace and precision, they stretched the home defense before their outside center (13) broke through to score. With the conversion added, Guildford took an early 0-7 lead.

The physicality of the match was relentless. Both sides put in massive hits and played at a relentless pace. Guildford initially edged the breakdown tussle utilising aggressive counter-rucking to put Dorking under significant pressure. Dorking compounded their own difficulties by forcing offloads in the tackle, handing soft possession back to the defending champions.

However, the tide began to turn at the set-piece. Dorking's lineouts started functioning smoothly, and their scrum began to assert real dominance. Turning the screw up front, Dorking marched up the field. Sustained pressure and slick handling in the tight released Toby Darbishire, who carved through the Guildford line to score. Jack Haines slotted the conversion to level the game at 7-7 going into halftime. A fair representation of the first half.

Second Half: Momentum Swings and Solo Magic
Playing uphill in the second half, Dorking came out of the blocks with immense intensity. They immediately pinned Guildford on their own try line, forcing a series of infringements. Opting for scrums to leverage their set-piece dominance, Dorking executed a playbook attack setting up Toby Shepherd to crash over under the posts. Jack Haines added the extras, putting Dorking ahead 14-7.

What immediately followed was the proverbial "coach killer." Dorking failed to control the subsequent restart, allowing Guildford to advance. Dorking res-established control but didn’t take care of the ball with a loose offload intercepted by Guildford’s star number 9 who sprinted under the posts. The conversion tied the thrilling encounter once again at 14-14.

Refusing to panic, Dorking leaned on their dominant set-piece and allowing them to control possession. This led to good recycling and ball moving to width to stretch Guildford out wide, the ball was spun to Seb Williams. Putting his foot to the floor, Williams produced a moment of individual brilliance, stepping past three Guildford defenders for a spectacular solo try under the posts. Jack Haines made no mistake off the tee, giving Dorking a 21-14 lead with 15 minutes left on the clock. They now needed to manage the game and control possession.

Defence Wins Championships
The final 15 minutes were an incredibly intense, penalty-strewn affair. Dorking continued to rely on their commanding set-piece, while Guildford’s early energy began to wane. As the referee counted down the final seconds, Dorking had the opportunity to kick the ball out and end the game. However, a determined Guildford fought to the bitter end, winning three consecutive penalties to mount one last desperate attack. Ultimately, the Dorking defence stood like a wall, securing a vital turnover and kicking the ball off the field to seal the victory.

This was a monumental win against a very impressive Guildford side. Dorking Colts, proving themselves to be one of the finest teams in the country, have earned their just reward: a chance to compete for silverware as one of the top two teams in Surrey at the Stoop.

Man of the Match: Eddie Clifford Jones – Introduced from the bench, he made a massive impact, providing crucial go-forward ball and putting in several dominant defensive shots to help haul his team over the finish line.
