A brief history of Dorking Rugby Football Club 1921-2013

1921          DRFC is founded with one Men’s team. First matches played on Meadowbank

1922          DRFC moves to single rugby pitch at Pixham Lane.

                   Pavilion is shared with Dorking Cricket Club and ground is shared with Old Dorkinians FC.

                    Teams change in Star & Garter pub.

1928          Second team (A XV) is founded.        

1940          DRFC ceases to play.

1946          DRFC resumes playing with one team.

1947          A XV is reformed.

1948          Third team (ExA XV) is founded. Second pitch is borrowed on cowfield at Sondes Place Farm.

1949          First fixture Dorking v Muffinmen

1951          Dorking Schoolboys XV is founded. One team, mixed ages 13-18, plays in Christmas holidays.

1954          Fourth team (B XV) is founded.

1965           Dorking Schoolboys XV is split into 3 age groups, U14, U16, U18.

1968          First Club Coach is elected.

1972           DRFC moves to Brockham Big Field, with new 50 year Lease for pavilion & 3 rugby pitches.

1972           DRFC builds new pavilion shared with Old Epsomians RFC (2 pitches) and MVDC (2 pitches).

1980           First Youth Chairman is elected.

1980           Dorking Minis, for boys and girls aged 6 to12, is founded.

1984            Pavilion bar area is extended from single to 2 storeys. Changing rooms remain single storey.

1985            First Club Chairman is elected.

1987            DRFC is appointed host Club of the first Surrey Rugby Mini Festival and continues to date. 

1988            First Women’s team is founded.

1988            1st XV plays in first London Leagues as RFU introduces Leagues for all Clubs.

1995            Old Epsomians RFC leaves Big Field and DRFC takes over OERFC assets and liabilities.

2005            DRFC is awarded RFU Mini and Youth Seal of Approval

2006            DRFC wins Powergen National Vase at Twickenham.

2007            DRFC wins U17 National Championship at Worcester.

2008            DRFC installs first-ever RFU playing standard floodlights.

2009            1st XV is promoted to RFU National Leagues for first time in Club’s history.

2009            DRFC legal status changes from Members’ Club to Incorporated Company, limited by guarantee.

2010            DRFC becomes first Rugby Club in England to be registered as a full Registered Charity.

2011             DRFC is granted new 50 year Lease from the National Trust.

2012             DRFC is awarded coveted RFU Accredited Club status. 

2012             DRFC wins U17 National Championship at Worcester.

2012             DRFC takes over responsibility for entire pavilion, which is demolished internally,

                      leaving only outside walls and roof standing.

                      £1m refurbishment is completed during summer months and the Pavilion is re-opened by Bill Beaumont,

                      RFU Chairman, on 31 Oct 2012.

2013             DRFC 1st XV wins the London and SE Division 1 League. Promotion to National League 2 South
