A mix of gifts in Santas sack this week but are we downhearted? Far from it…
Guildford 30 Dorking 17
After the festive fun at home the previous week it all went a bit Pete Tong for the 1st XV over at Guildford after a first half best forgotten…
Guildford must have thought Christmas had come early as they found themselves 24-0 up nearing half time, playing well and capitalising on an uncharacteristic number of lapses of concentration by the Red & Whites which gifted the home side some pretty simple scores.
Yet it had all started so well as we took the game to Guildford in the first 10 minutes and looked certain to score. In the end it took until the end of the half for try-machine Mike Terelak to trouble the scoreboard with a try in the corner to leave us 24-5 adrift.
You could argue that we won the second half. Matt Noble forced a try after a great breakout by Tom Hunt and Ed Carne before the highly promising Finn Osborne – on as sub in the second row – got the touchdown from a decent forward drive for a try on his debut. Matt converted to leave us 17-24 behind and for a moment the comeback looked on.
But Guildford to their credit steadied the ship, with their influential 10 slotting two penalties to keep them on course for a deserved victory.
Still, nil desperandum… we never gave up and battled to the end and, of course, it was great to see three sets of brothers on the park – the Edwards, the Dobsons and, for the first time, The Osbornes!
The break will allow some of the wounded soldiers to recover and we go again on Jan 7 at home to Colchester.
